Inside DSEI Issue 12 February 2017

Terrorism threat at the forefront of our minds Security, a dedicated This rising threat was reflected within the survey of the last issue of Inside DSEI (October 2016), where we asked a number of defence and security companies whether they felt that the world was a more dangerous place now in comparison to the last DSEI event; 60% of respondents believed that the world is a more dangerous place, with only 1.5% believing the world to be safer than around 18 months ago. Terrorism was listed as the top reason for causing this surge in feelings of danger, both as an organised attack or an act of a lone wolf. With the highly publicised terror attacks of 2016 pushed into the forefront of our minds by international news, this global threat affects every country and every individual; it then comes as no surprise that interest in counter terror solutions has spiked, again reflecting interest that DSEI has seen in this area. Zone in the DSEI portfolio, is rising in influence and significance in the global marketplace, mirroring the increasing concern with international security. This increased security threat does provide an opportunity: an opportunity to focus on forging stronger international partnerships, strengthening national security and responses, working on innovative safety solutions, and for forward-thinking SMEs to come into the limelight. A record number of first time exhibitors exhibited in the Security Zone in 2015, with this year’s event expecting the same level of new interest. The latest equipment and technologies, ranging from security and Special Forces training, tactical equipment, perimeter security covert and overt surveillance and camera equipment and PPE will be on display, with showcases on how to counter priority threats, such as cyber-attacks and terrorism. The Security Theatre at DSEI is enhanced and expanded for 2017 to include security capability demonstrations, discussions on the challenges of increased mass migration on border security and civil order, developing the next generation of ‘cyber warriors’ and emerging security trends, e.g. UAS, Internet of Things, IP enabled infrastructure, vehicles and wearable devices.
